Romania’s president lays out his country’s case as NATO’s most committed eastern flank ally — and he’s backing it with billions

In a direct message to the United States, Romania says it isn’t asking America for more. It’s offering to do more. The country is on track to spend 5% of GDP on defense by 2035, is building one of the largest military infrastructure programs on NATO’s eastern flank (€2.5-3 billion at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base alone), and has committed to American-made Patriot systems, HIMARS, F-16s, Abrams tanks, and 32 F-35As.

With drones violating Romanian airspace dozens of times in recent months and American intelligence suggesting Russia may test NATO’s resolve with a limited move against an allied country, Romania is making clear it won’t wait to be tested before it’s ready.
